Augustinian Spirituality

What is Augustinian Spirituality?

At the heart of Augustinian Spirituality is:

  1. Truth: The restless search for God. "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you." -St. Augustine
  2. Unity: Drawing nearer to God in shared community. Acts 4:32-35
  3. Charity: The Greatest Commandment. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind...love your neighbor as yourself".  Matthew 22:34-40  "Before all else dear brothers, love God and then your neighbor, because these are the chief commandments given to us". - St. Augustine

Key Elements of an Augustinian Life

  • Constant Search for God: Through a deep interior life.
    • Love of God: The ultimate end and source of all spiritual life.
  • A Practical Love of One's Neighbor: As a visible sign of love for God.
    • Love of Neighbor: A practical fulfillment of that love in daily life.
  • Pursuit of Truth: Recognizing that truth is found in Christ.
